When cooking with cast iron, I try never to use metal utensils. They will scratch your cooking surface and ruin your seasoning. Instead, I try to always use wood or silicon utensils.
In addition, there are a few other kitchen accessories I also use with cast iron that I thought I would pass along. The following is a list of the cast iron accessories that I use everyday:
Cast Iron Skillet Handle Covers
- Cast iron pan handles get hot. I keep a set of our of these in mu drawer with other pot holders
Silicone Trivets Mats
- Drop one of these on the counter where you are preparing food. They can also double as a potholder in a pinch I also use place them between my stacked pans to protect the cooking surfaces from getting scratched.
Rubbermaid High Heat Silicone Spatula
- This spatula is not just for food preparation. This heat resistant spatula enables you to use while cooking everything from scrambled eggs to flipping crepes.
OXO Spatula
- This heat resistant silicon spatula won't scratch your pans. They come in a few different sizes depending on what you like to cook.
OXO Silicon Tongs
- These heat resistant, nylon tipped tongs won't scratch your pans, and come in multiple sizes.
Infrared Thermometer Temperature Gun
- Whether it's making pancakes, french toast, crepes, etc., the secret to getting that perfect, golden brown result is to heat your griddle to 400 degrees. I set my gas burner on low, and let my griddle heat up while I'm making the batter. My temperature gun lets me know when my griddle is ready.
Scrub Brush with Scraper
- Once I'm done cooking, I let me pan cool and clean my pan with hot water (no soap) and my scrub brush. I like this one because it also has a dish scraper.
Scotch-Brite Non-Scratch Scour Pads
- Don't use the scour side of your kitchen spunge on your cast iron. it will scratch your pan and wear off your seasoning. These Scotch-Brite pads will do the job while not ruining your seasoning.
Lodge Pan Scrapers
- If you've some baked on crud that resists your scrub brush and scour pan, these pan scrapers will come to your rescue without scratching your pans.
